About Universiti Teknologi Malaysia

  • UTM began in 1904 as a technical school aimed at training technicians to serve the Railway, Survey, and Public Works Departments of the Federated Malay States.

  • Officially known as Treacher Technical School, the course was part-time, with trainees working and training according to the technical requirements of their jobs.

  • In 1941, the Technical School was upgraded to a college, with a proposal to establish a new Technical College, which officially opened in 1955. The Technical College taught diploma-level engineering courses in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical and radio engineering, land surveying, construction engineering, and quality surveying, in addition to a specialized course in automotive engineering.

  • In 1960, the college's engineering programs were upgraded to the bachelor's level, with first and second grades in the Cambridge Certificate or Malaysian School Certificate, with good grades in English and basic mathematics. Priority was given to those with grades in science subjects.

  • In 1975, the college officially became the University of Technology Malaysia (UTM) and began focusing on establishing and developing its academic faculties.

  • The Faculty of Engineering was divided into three independent faculties: Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering, along with the Faculty of Built Environment, the Faculty of Surveying, the Science Center, and the Humanities Student Center.

  • Over time, several new colleges were established, such as the College of Science, the College of Chemical Engineering and Natural Resources, and the Institute of Computer Science.
