A Qualitative Leap for Turkish Universities in the THE 2026 World University Rankings for Education Sciences

Turkish academic institutions have achieved a new milestone in the higher education sector, with 44 universities securing positions on the list of the world's best universities in the "Education Sciences" subject, according to the results of the Times Higher Education (THE) 2026 rankings.

According to recent data from the Council of Higher Education (CoHE/YÖK), the Turkish presence in this discipline recorded significant growth, with an increase of nine universities compared to last year, which featured 35 universities.

Educational Specializations in Turkish Universities

Education Sciences is a broad academic discipline focused on studying teaching and learning methods, curriculum development, and the management of educational institutions.

Educational specializations typically include the following sub-fields:

  • Teacher Training: Qualifying teaching staff for various educational levels (primary, middle, and high school).

  • Curriculum and Instruction: Studying how to design school curricula and develop effective teaching methods.

  • Educational Leadership/Management: Managing schools, universities, and educational institutions and developing educational policies.

  • Educational Psychology: Studying how humans learn, cognitive processes, and addressing learning difficulties.

  • Educational Technology: Integrating technology and digital tools into the educational process.

  • Measurement and Evaluation: Designing tests and evaluating student performance and educational systems.

  • Special Education: Teaching individuals with special needs and gifted students.

Turkish Universities in the "Top 100" Club

On the individual ranking level, Middle East Technical University (METU) achieved a remarkable breakthrough by entering the list of the top 100 universities worldwide, ranking 93rd globally. It was followed by Boğaziçi University, which ranked in the (201-250) bracket, and Hacettepe University in the (251-300) bracket. Additionally, Ankara, Gazi, İnönü, and Yıldız Technical universities showed a strong presence within the top (401-500) global bracket.

Turkish Universities: Continental and International Superiority

These results have placed Turkey in a prominent position on the international educational map, ranking third in Europe and fourth globally in terms of the number of universities included in the "Top 1000" list for Education Sciences. With this numerical momentum of 44 universities, Turkey has successfully surpassed major European nations in this field, including Germany, France, and Italy.

The Council of Higher Education (CoHE) stated that the THE 2026 ranking results serve as tangible evidence of the rising competitive power of Turkish universities in international arenas. The Council pointed out that this development reflects a strategy of transitioning from a focus on quantity to enhancing qualitative efficiency, which has contributed to increasing the academic impact and international presence of Turkish higher education in vital disciplines.
